CTP Umpiring Update

lab

Hi All Fellow Pirates

Season 2010 saw the club institute a system where all players who made the effort to umpire received payment which has markedly reduced the number of games we missed umpiring and made it much easier to attract people to umpire. It has also given another avenue of revenue for those members requiring assistance in paying fees.

As we are coming to the end of the season, umpiring credits and payments are being finalised. Please check under the Umpiring tab to confirm your umpiring duties completed. If you have any queries please reply to this email and I will have the Umpire Coordinator look into it.

Regards
Shane Jamieson

Kookaburras prepare to win their 3rd Champions Trophy in a row

Kookaburras coach Ric Charlesworth firmly has the 2012 London Olympics in his sights, taking a very young side into the 2010 Champions Trophy tournament which begins this Saturday in Germany. With a team which is significantly different to that which won the 2009 Champions Trophy and the 2010 World Cup earlier this year, Charlesworth has gone with a much younger line up to build further depth in the Kookaburras squad ahead of the 2012 London Olympics. The Passing of a Club Legend

lab

The Passing of a Curtin Trinity Pirates Legend

It is with sadness that the club sees the passing of John Hegge. John came to the club in the 1950's purely by going down to the WACA and listening to the half time chats. He quickly became accepted as part of the CBC and Trinity Hockey family with his enthusiasm enduring him to all except some officials as recounted by Eric Alcock (Member 1957-1974, Ex-President and Club Captain):

"John Hegge was a great asset to the club. He stands in the records as being the first Trinity supporter to be thrown off the field! In his inimitable style, John was running up and down the sidelines at the WACA, cheering the side on and offering his advice all round before the umpire took umbrage and sent him out of the playing area. I have great memories of John, the time he spent as Secretary when I was President and more so as a hard-working, willing and cheerful member. Such generous and well-meaning people are hard to find."

John continued playing hockey into the period when the Trinity and Curtin Hockey Clubs merg ed in 1991 and was distinguishable by his playing stick with multiple layers of electrical tape maintaining the integrity of the 1970's design.

John was a regular spectator at both the men's and women's first division matches and club finals up until the end of the 2009 season even after he had been diagnosed with his terminal condition. It was also during 2009 that his lovely wife Henny, suddenly passed away.

John Hegge aged 84, passed away peacefully on 18 July 2010.

Reminder of HockeyWA's Alcohol Policy

lab
ALCOHOL AT TRINITY PLAYING GROUNDS

Please be aware that this is a licensed venue and NO alcoholic drinks can be brought from outside and consumed in or around the venue and surrounding hockey fields.

If you choose to break this policy you are breaching the license of this venue and this will NOT be tolerated.

PENALITES INCLUDE Written notification to your club Heavy FINES POINTS Deduction for your team. If you see anyone breaking this policy, please report them to venue staff and help Hockey WA, our associate facilities and our members play and socialise in a safe and friendly environment. Sideline eskies = BIG FINES + LOSE POINTS

ALCOHOL AT CLUB VENUES POLICY
Rationale

The financial costs associated with the playing of hockey in WA are substantial, therefore clubs utilise many avenues to generate revenue with one of the main and most profitable being the sale of food and drinks for members, guests and opposition. In particular the sale of alcohol is very important not only to the financial aspect of many clubs but also to assist in the generation of club fellowship and camaraderie.

The rules and regulations surrounding the sale of alcohol at venues are both onerous and the penalties for breaches substantial, therefore it is in the best interests of all parties within the hockey community of Perth to ensure that these rules and regulations are adhered too. Additionally clubs that provide licensed facilities should be able to rely on the goodwill of fellow hockey players in support of these facilities. To this end the following directions are made to clubs in an effort to assist Hockey WA to firstly identify individuals/teams /clubs that circumvent these guidelines and secondly to provide procedures that will penalise recurrent offenders.

Guidelines

  1. No alcohol is to be brought onto the grounds associated with any club that provides licensed facilities for the sale of alcohol.
  2. Additionally visitors to these premises are to ensure that they comply with all the specific regulations relating to the licence granted to those premises. Such as the areas in which alcohol can be consumed and the hours to which such a licence applies.
  3. Clubs with licensed premises are encouraged to promote the use of these facilities by ensuring:
    * stocks and range are maintained,
    * facilities are clean tidy and presentable,
    * Prices are competitive and in line with other licensed facilities found within the vicinity.

Directions to Clubs
It is generally anticipated that teams who transgress these guidelines will abide by them once a senior member of the licensed club bring the breach to their attention. Should adherence to the requirements of that licence not be forthcoming then the licensed club can utilise the provisions outlined within the conditions of their liquor licence and associated regulations to enforce compliance such as the calling of the Police to remove offenders.

ALCOHOL AT CLUB VENUES POLICY

However in relation to the guidelines should individuals/teams/clubs continue to ignore the requests of the licensed club to adhere to the guidelines then the following course of action is to be undertaken:

  1. Correspondence outlining the breach of the guidelines and identifying the individual and team that offended is to be forwarded to the club to which they are a member. (Preferably the President or Secretary of that club).
  2. A copy is also to be forwarded to Hockey WA as a form of record keeping and as a means of tracking serial offenders.
  3. Clubs whose members have offended should respond within 14 days of receiving the correspondence, advising of the actions taken in rectifying the breach, whether it is counselling or other actions dependent on the severity of the offence. They should also copy in Hockey WA in this response.
  4. Should Hockey WA receive 2 such complaints regarding any particular team or individual linked to a club then correspondence from the Hockey WA administration outlining the importance of adherence to these guidelines and of the penalties that will be applied should a further breach occur is to be forwarded to the offending club's President.
  5. Upon receipt of a 3rd complaint Hockey WA has the discretion to impose a monetary fine of $500, a loss of 3 premiership points or both. Considering the substantial fines imposed on a venue if their licensing agreement is breached, this fine is a minimal amount.

Summary
While the vast majority of players and teams within the competition work within the guidelines listed there are, as in any large group, individuals who do not and their actions can have substantive impacts on the operations of clubs, hence the need for this policy. It is anticipated that the majority of transgressions will be attended to via the initial correspondence between clubs, President to President, so to speak. The need to include Hockey WA in the correspondence initially is as a means by which serial offenders can be identified and action taken. Additionally the support hockey receives from the State Government via its Heathway programs at both the association and club level is vital, therefore this initiative which will assist in the responsible consumption of alcohol within the community, does in some way provide a return on that sponsorship. Finally, by encouraging visiting teams to attend opposition clubrooms Hockey WA and the broader hockey community are assisting in the development of camaraderie between clubs and this sense of community will only assist in the strategic development of our sport.

In 2010, CTP will be trying a new umpiring paradigm in which each senior player will pay a $50 umpiring levy and in which each person who umpires a CTP umpiring allocation will be paid $40. The levy will be paid to Club and payments made by the club to the umpire. In addition, this year all umpiring allocations will be allocated by the Club Umpire Coordinator rather than team managers. Team Managers must liaise with the Umpire Coordinator to ensure that allocated games are covered. This paradigm recognises that some players hate umpiring and will pay to get out of it, while others are happy to umpire and be paid for doing so.

This is briefly what we plan to do:

1. Essentially each CTP player will pay $50 as an umpiring levy. Payments are made by the player to the Treasurer.

2. Any person umpiring for CTP is paid $40 per game.

  a. If people outside the club to umpire, they will be paid making an EFT payment to them.

  b. If they are club members then they will get a credit to their fees or if these have been paid a payment from the club.

3. As all the fixtures are published; interested umpires can let the Umpire Coordinator what they want to do. Potential umpires are assessed making sure they can umpire and will umpire, as we do not want to lose points.

The potential benefits to the Club and our members are:

1. Good umpires are identified and given a pathway into HWA ranks.

2. All games are covered and we do not lose points or receive fines.

3. Umpiring commitments are arranged early.

4. Members who struggle to afford fees can generate income.

If you are interested in umpiring this season please contact Dennis Coates, Umpire Coordinator at email dcoates@iinet.net.au

Regards

Shane Jamieson, Club President

Experimental rules for the 2010 season

lab

Hockey WA was advised last week that Hockey Australia had decided to include the FIH Experimental Rules in the 2010 Australian Hockey League competition and that it was most likely that they would also be played at underage national championships (excluding the U18's due to their timing). All players and officials should familiarise themselves with these new rules: ExperimentalRules2010.pdf.

2010 CTP Online Registration Database

This year we have developed an online Player and Supporter Registration Database as an alternate to the paper-based registration of previous years. We encourage everyone to try out this new system, but if you aren't confident with new technologie, please feel free to printout and return the forms on this page to register with the club. The Player and Supporter database uses SSL security certificates (like your Bank does), plus additional encryption details to ensure that all of your personal information is kept very safe.

Step 1. Please REGISTER your details for a new CTP online account. You will need a VALID email address to be able to complete this step. Once you have registered, check your email account for an email from web @ pirates.org.au and click the link contained to activate your account. Note: you can register as either a CTP Player, or as a CTP Supporter (where only limited contact information is required).

Step 2. Once you have successfully registered and activated your account, you can now LOGIN and enter your Player / Supported details. You can return to this page at any time, hit the LOGIN button and update your details.

History

History of the Curtin Trinity Pirates Hockey Club

Curtin Trinity Pirates Hockey Club was formed in 1998 through the merger of two of the strongest Men's and Women's First Division Clubs of recent years - Curtin Trinity Tigers Hockey Club and The Pirates Hockey Club. The decision proved to be a great one, with the new Club being successful in winning Premierships in the First and Second Divisions of both the Men's and Women's competitions in their inaugural 1998 season. Each of these two original clubs had a strong history of their own. The combination of the Tigers colours and the Pirates name means that the important history of each club has been retained.

Pirates Women's Hockey Club originated in 1931 with a team entered in D grade. It is coincidental that their first registered colours were those used today - navy and orange. The founding secretary Mrs Pat Goodridge approached (Pirated) several friends from other teams to form a new club, hence the name. Since reaching A1 grade status in the 1940's the Pirates team has rarely been out of the top four, winning many premierships. Throughout the years they have shared the facilities of Subs and Aquinas before fully amalgamating with Curtin Trinity. Trinity Hockey Club (originally CBC) starting in 1941 with their first Junior team. 1945 saw their first Senior team nominated in the WA hockey competition. The name changed to Trinity in 1965 when the College moved premises to its current site next to the WACA. The Clubs current home grounds of Trinity Playing Fields, on Manning Road Waterford, were first used in the 70's.

Curtin Hockey Club (originally WAIT, started 1973) changed to Curtin University in the late 80's and merged with Trinity to form Curtin Trinity Tigers in 1991. Over the years all three clubs have developed many top class players. The first year of Curtin Trinity Pirates in 1998 saw no less than 26 members representing State or Australian teams along with Premierships in six grades. In its short history since the merger the Premierships have continued to flow and players continue to break into National and International ranks.
